Is there a way to convert most oven recipes to use a microwave oven?

GrammastolaRosea asked:

Basically, I’m in China, and my host family has a stove and a microwave. I’m planning on making a Thanksgiving dinner for them, but almost all American food uses the oven or other unobtainable ingredients. Is it possible to make a pumpkin pie, corn pudding, stuffing, and bread pudding in a microwave? I don’t see why not, just reduce the amount of liquid in the recipe and the cooking times are likely to be very different, but as long as I watch it, will this work?

Last night I was wondering this myself while making cookies. Try looking up what you want to make on a google/yahoo search.. and then just add “microwave recipe”.

For the exact reasons you stated, changing amount of liquid, cooking times etc, there is not a good “conversion formula” for changing recipes from oven to microwave. I can post a few of the specific one’s you are looking for and link a few sites in hopes that you can access them.

    No-bake pumpkin pie

    Pumpkin Cream Pie
    1-1/2 c. cold skim milk
1 pkg. sugarless instant pudding mix
    1 c. pumpkin
    1 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
    1 c. prepared whipped topping (non-dairy)

Combine milk, pudding mix, pumpkin and spice. Beat at low speed for 1 minute. Fold in whipped topping. Pour into shallow dish or baked pie shell. Chill approximately 3 hours.

for pumpkin pie spice, sub 1 tsp cinnamon and 1/2 tsp cloves

    Modified corn pudding

    2 cups hot cooked rice
1 (2.8 ounce) can French fried onions, divided
    1 cup sour cream
1 (16 ounce) can cream style corn
1 cup (4 ounce) shredded Cheddar

Combine rice and 2/3 cup French fried onions. Spoon half the rice mixture into a microwave-safe 2-quart shallow casserole. Spread sour cream over rice. Layer half of the corn and half of the cheese over sour cream. Top with remaining rice, corn and cheese. Cover with vented plastic wrap. Microwave on HIGH for 8 minutes or until heated through. Sprinkle with remaining onions. Microwave 1 minute until onions are golden.

If you have a heavy pot with a lid, like LeCrueset, you can do the stuffing and bread pudding on the stove. That is likely to yield better results than the microwave.

You can certainly do the “green bean casserole” in the wave…it’s just mix and heat.

Linked are some microwave recipe sites…hope this helps!!!
